If you work in advertising, then you probably know that the world of regulatory compliance is about as fun as it sounds.

Creatives have the pleasure of making award-winning assets, and marketing is tasked with execution.

Meanwhile, the legal department is left holding the bag: Blasting all those assets with any teeny-tiny disclaimers that might be required.

This is, of course, a boring but indispensable job—especially if the marketing materials are for a heavily regulated industry in, say, the financial or medical world. Few topics in advertising are more paramount than airtight compliance.

Thankfully, it’s 2024, which means that for every time-sucking task, there’s an elegant GenAI solution waiting in the wings.

Let’s take a (shallow) dive into how regulated industries can improve their platform, brand, and regulatory adherence using SmartAssets.

So many disclaimers, so little time

“Ensuring that assets meet platform guidelines, brand standards, and regulatory compliance can take hours,” explains Lindsay Hong, CEO and co-founder at SmartAssets.

SmartAssets—Stagwell Marketing Cloud’s creative effectiveness platform—recently expanded its software capabilities to meet the stringent needs of a global fintech app launching dozens of advertising campaigns across several advertising platforms all at once.

“We wanted to take the monotonous work out of the equation and reduce the time it takes Legal, Marketing, and Creative teams to review and approve creative content,” Hong says. “And at the same time, we also wanted to make sure that they’re getting it right.”

It’s a bigger job than you might think.

Here's how SmartAssets was able to step in and simplify the process for a fintech brand.

Automating the grunt work

The SmartAssets team found that the fintech client in question was sinking serious bandwidth into compliance.

Teams were roughly spending a collective 500 hours reviewing language, legal copy, punctuation, aspect ratios, file formats, video durations, file sizes, and other technical and logistical factors per deliverable campaign.

By automating the workload with SmartAssets, this task was reduced to mere minutes.

How this works, without getting too granular:

  • The platform’s built-in compliance tools efficiently detect and validate all technical and visual elements.
  • Using a unique combination of computer vision and rule-based logic, 34 rules were implemented for 14 different ad placements, from social media to app stores, and programmatic online video.
  • Wherever the guidelines are not met, the platform intelligently flags this for review and highlights the reason that the asset did not meet the criteria—saving the teams time and reducing the risk of  manual error.

In less than one month, the brand was effectively able to streamline its content production process and implement a robust quality-assurance process.

What makes SmartAssets even more interesting to brands is that it allows them to go beyond standard compliance requirements and platform guidelines.

This means it also allows brands to create their own unique guardrails, and ensure that content meets the standards that they want to set at a global level.

And that’s not the only application of SmartAssets or the wider Stagwell Marketing Cloud suite, of course.
